Updates to Flags and Flag Poles
Posted on Sep 26, 2024
Residents are allowed to display up to three flags on their lot, as long as the applicable guidelines are followed and the ARC has approved an application for the pole(s). Below is a summary of the guidelines:
Wall-mounted flag poles:
- Approval is needed before installation.
- A maximum of two (2) wall-mounted poles can be installed on the home.
- Must be mounted with brackets and attached to the house. They cannot be mounted to other structures on the lot.
- The size of the pole should be appropriate for the size of the house, at the discretion of the ARC. In no cases can the pole exceed eight feet in length.
- Flags must not be hung or draped.
- Tip: Applications should include a photo of the house from the street marking the proposed location(s) of the flag poles, the size of the flagpoles, mounting style, and the flag(s) you will display.
Free-standing flag poles:
- Approval is needed before installation.
- Only one (1) free-standing pole is permitted on each lot.
- The size of the pole should be appropriate for the lot size, house size and location. As a general rule, the flagpole should not exceed the height of the rooftop of the home. In no cases can the pole exceed 20 feet.
- Lighting for flags must be mounted on the ground, directed at the flag, with no more than 500 lumens. Bulbs may not exceed a light appearance (color temperature) of 3000 k. Lighting cannot be mounted on the pole.
- Tip: Applications should include the exact placement location requested.
The following flags are allowed:
- All flags allowed under Arizona law (A.R.S. §33-1808).
- Flags can only be displayed on an approved flag pole, following the guidelines above.
- Political flags (and political signs) can be displayed 71 days before the election and no later than 15 days after the general election if the candidate advances to the general election. If the candidate does not advance past the primary, the flag must be removed within fifteen (15) days after the primary election. "Political sign (flag)" means a sign that attempts to influence the outcome of an election, including supporting or opposing the recall of a public officer or supporting or opposing the circulation of a petition for a ballot measure, question or proposition or the recall of a public officer.
- Sports team flags may be flown only on the day the team is playing a game.
- Approval is not needed for the flags listed above. Other flags may be permitted if submitted and approved by the ARC.
- The Board and ARC reserve the right to require the removal of any flags that they deem inappropriate.
Flags must be in good condition and comply with all appropriate regulatory agencies’ laws, guidelines and statutes.
