Human Foods Toxic to Pets

If you think your pet may have ingested the following foods, you should contact ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435. Poison Control will tell you if your pet needs to be seen by a veterinarian. Sometimes, inducing vomiting is recommended and some toxins even require hospitalized treatment.
Chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst, excessive urination, tremors and seizures.
Grapes and Raisins can cause acute kidney failure. Sometimes, even one grape can be fatal. Take your pet immediately to an emergency veterinary facility because once symptoms start, it can sometimes be too late.
Onions and Garlic can damage red blood cells and lead to anemia. Symptoms include weakness, lethargy, pale gums, and red or brown urine. A blood transfusion may be required.
Avocados contain persin in the skin, flesh and pit. Symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea, but the pit can cause a foreign body intestinal obstruction that might require surgery.
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener often found in sugar-free gum and gummy vitamins. This can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and can even cause liver failure. Go straight to an emergency veterinary facility so they can monitor your pet’s blood sugar and liver values.
Macadamia Nuts can cause weakness, tremors, and fever in dogs.
